Classes of Fires and types of extinguishers

Class A Fires
Involves ordinary combustibles such as wood, cloth , paper , cardboard, rubber and many plastics.
Types of extinguishers: water, multipurpose dry chemical agents, halogenated agents, wet chemical agents and foam.
Warning: It is very dangerous to use water or a fire extinguisher labeled only for class A fires on a fire involving flammable liquids or energized electrical equipment.

Class B Fires
Involves flammables such as gasoline, oil, grease, tar, oil-based paint, lacquer and flammable gas.
Types of extinguishers: carbon dioxide, multipurpose dry chemical gents, halogenated agents an foam (for liquids only)

Class C Fires
Involves energized electrical equipment – including wiring, use boxes, circuit breakers, machinery and appliances.
Types of extinguishers: carbon dioxide, multipurpose dry chemicals, halogenated agents.

Class D Fires
Involves combustible metals, such as magnesium, lithium and potassium
Types of extinguishers: Dry powder agents approved for use on the specific combustible metal hazard

Class K Fires
Involves combustible cooking oils and fats
Types of Extinguishers: Wet chemical agents and dry chemical agents

 Before you attempt to fight a fire in the workplace:

• Sound the alarm. Make sure that someone is notifying the fire department and that people are evacuating the building
• Evaluate the fire. Determine whether you can safely fight the fire with the extinguisher you have at hand. If hazardous or flammable materials are near the fire. The situation might be quite dangerous. It might be best to leave the building and let trained fire fighters handle the fire.
• If the smoke is very heavy or building up rapidly, leave immediately.
• Make sure you know how to properly operate the fire extinguisher and the right way to fight the fire.
• Make sure you have an unobstructed escape to your back, incase you cannot extinguish the fire
• Approach the fire cautiously and be ready to evacuate quickly if conditions change.
• Know how to use the extinguisher. There is no time to read directions during an emergency.
